Meet The Nedlands Chiropractic Wellness Team

Dr. Robert Leigh

Dr. Robert LeighMy first impression of chiropractic was formed seeing my dad on a chiropractors table having his spine “cracked”. Then I saw a chiropractor for an injury received from my teenage trolley pushing job days. This also involved having my spine “cracked”. Both chiropractors seemed like really nice gents and the techniques used were much gentler than they looked at first, but I wouldn’t say there was a huge career desire created from those experiences.

Having my dad choose a career as a nutritionist/ naturopath and seeing him help great numbers of people toward better health helped inspire me toward a career in natural or in those days( mid 80’s) “alternative” health modalities. It was at a year 10 careers day at my school that a chiropractic representative really grabbed my attention and I chose year 11 subjects accordingly, with a view to studying the required science subjects firstly at school and then at university to enable the pursuit of a chiropractic career.

So from Pittwater High School in Sydney's Northern Beaches I went to Sydney University and completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in anatomy and physiology, and then attended Macquarie University gaining a Masters of Chiropractic Science in 1991. To survive financially through uni I worked in 2 chiropractic clinics massaging each patient before their chiropractor adjusted them, which was great hands on experience for me, and laid the foundation for my current approach to practice of chiropractic involving deep soft tissue releases before adjustments. One of the said chiro's had a practice in Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches and he went to the beach across the road each morning and practiced from 2 till 6 pm each day. The life balance available in the chiropractic profession was also attractive to me!

I then practiced in Sydney from 1991 until 1995 when I moved to Perth to help out in a church group. I have since practiced in the Chelsea Centre until the present day, enjoying my practice very much in the West and now considering myself a West Australian for life.

It is such a blessing to be able to enhance peoples health and wellbeing through chiropractic care for a living. I also strive to educate people regarding healthier life choices as knowledge really does empower us to make the choices necessary for greater health and wellbeing. We are not programmed for daily tiredness, fatigue, anxiety, anger, irritability, aching joints, depression, diabetes and then early death. Healthier choices can improve our lives, no matter where we are at.

It brings me great joy to see peoples lives change for the better. Knowing for example that Brent a father of 2 young kids in his early 40’s now doesn’t take 5 -6 Panadols each day for his headaches and neck pain. In fact he has none! Yes he feels more alive personally but just consider how his interactions with his work mates and his productivity have changed, let alone with his children and wife after work. Chiropractic care and a few healthier choices can enhance our lives remarkably!

In 1999 I married the love of my life Sharon and we currently live in Scarborough with our three boys Jadon(6), Connor(5) and Daniel(1.5) and enjoy the coastal lifestyle very much. Perths weather and the numerous great outdoor facilities and parks make it, in our opinion, the perfect place for raising a family. Having started golf at about the age of 12 and playing on and off for years, I now play once weekly on a variety of courses throughout Perth and its’ immediate surrounds. For me , not only is it a challenge, but it is also a form of escape and replenishment for the mind and the body. Walking the dew covered fairways as the golden sun rays reflect off the trees in the early morning is simply good for the soul.

Of course regular chiropractic adjustments facilitate not only a good golf game but also help my body and mind to cope with the stresses imposed by a busy lifestyle with work, family and church responsibilities all adding to the load. Having learned that, unlike my initial experience of chiros being just bone crunchers, chiropractic adjustments reduce stress hormones in the body and therefore facilitate not only increased spinal function but also greater health and longevity, we make it a priority for our whole family to have their spines checked every 2 to 3 weeks. Just like dental hygiene is a normal part of life , so is spinal hygiene as we only get one spine!

So…., who doesn’t have any stresses in their lives? We all do! Chiropractic plays an integral part in reducing the effects of stress on our bodies and minds, so don’t wait until you are “munted” and can’t walk or move your neck, book in and lets get optimal spinal hygiene happening for you and your family. Carpe Diem – “Sieze the day”, optimize your potential!

Dr. Andrew Wilkinson

Dr. Andrew WilkinsonMy attention was drawn to Chiropractic after I left high school and took a labourer’s position on my uncle’s farm. He had recently purchased a large portion of grazing land that was covered in rocks and logs and various other weathered objects and it was my role to clear the land. I was well informed on how to lift correctly, but typical of human nature I became slack and complacent and started relying on my back to lift heavy objects instead of my legs.

After about 3 weeks of continual lifting, I awoke one morning with the strangest sensation; I couldn’t open my mouth! My Uncle, who swears by chiropractic, suggested I visit a Chiropractor for treatment. After consulting a Chiropractor in Perth, it was clear that my pelvis was functionally misaligned, and was the result of my poor lifting technique. I was confused as to how that could cause my jaw to lock? The Chiropractor explained to me that my body started compensating for the excessive and unnatural stresses that I was placing on my body and spine. And so the compensation eventually moved up my biomechanical chain causing my jaw to lock. After a few treatments I was opening my jaw normally. It’s was amazing that something so seemingly distant from my jaw (i.e. my pelvis) was the structural cause of my problem. My fascination with this and the body lead me to follow the path of chiropractic. To this day I am still astonished at how intimately connected the entire neuromusculoskeletal system is.

In 2007, I travelled to the north east of India to volunteer my time and chiropractic skills to Bangladesh refugees, to aid and improve the wellbeing of the lives of those who were born into poverty. It was a humbling experience to say the least. Our patients had very little exposure to medical care, and were overwhelmingly grateful for our help. It was brilliant to see how chiropractic could change people’s lives and if I ever had doubts as to the effectiveness of chiropractic, my doubts were alleviated on that trip.

I studied my trade here in Perth at Murdoch University, and since then, in my experience as a Chiropractor I am continually stunned at the effectiveness of a chiropractic adjustment. The body is a complex system of wires that is run by a super computer, and as chiropractors it is our role to keep that system free of obstruction and interference. Chiropractors aren’t miracle workers, but if nervous interference from spinal biomechanical inefficiencies is the source of the problem, then chiropractors can help.

I have been involved in sport most of my life and as I am turning 30 this year, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance to me. Though it is not always possible, it is my aim to get my spine checked at least weekly so that in my endeavour for optimal health and fitness and I am ahead of the game. Mosby’s Health Dictionary states that “health or disease is the expressions of the success or failure experienced by the organism in its efforts to respond adaptively to environmental challenges”.   So the better prepared we are for life’s little challenges, the greater the state of health we can achieve.  I therefore look forward to helping you achieve success with your health.

Tina Lembo

Tina Fenn - Wellness Team Coordinator

I have had a neck problem for over 20 years and I lived in constant pain.

As far as I was concerned there was nothing I could do about it so pain became apart of my life.

That was until I met the team from Longevity Wellness Centre.

After a program of care the tension in my neck is gone and I started to notice other wonderful changes ie: sitting and standing for long period of time pain free, increased energy, improved sleep and the list goes on.

My passion is to help people and make a difference in their lives so working with the wonderful team at the Longevity Wellness Centre is the perfect job for me.

I also volunteer at Radio Lolli Pop at PMH Perth Children’s Hospital. I get to play games, read books and make the sick children laugh.

Hobbies and activities: I love to keep fit playing soccer, tennis, squash and ten pin bowling. Bike riding, fishing, walking, reading and gardening are some of the activities I enjoy.

Natasha Christensen - Head Chiropractic Assistant

Having experienced the benefits of chiropractic since I was very young, It was a fairly natural progression for me to become part of the Longevity Wellness Team. I love being fit and healthy, I regularly work out in the gym, I have a very healthy diet and I love educating and talking to our clients about maintaining optimum health through a healthy lifestyle which includes chiropractic wellness care.

I spend my leisure time relaxing, dancing, going to the beach and socialising with my family and friends.

Jaya Henderson - Chiropractic Assistant

I had my first chiropractic adjustment when I was two weeks old which cured my colic and restless sleeping much to my mum’s delight. I have been having regular chiropractic adjustments ever since and still remember being a nosey five year old popping behind the front desk to help/annoy the chiropractic assistants. So once I finished year 12 at the end of 2000, I decided I had to look for a part-time job and was thrilled to be offered a job as a Chiropractic Assistant.

While working at the Chelsea Centre I have completed a Bachelor of Communications with a double major in Public Relations and Advertising and I am now studying Psychology at the University of Western Australia while continuing to work as an Actor and Chiropractic Assistant, all three keeping me very busy!

I have been very lucky to have learnt and understood the health benefits of Chiropractic care and greatly enjoy teaching others how they too can receive optimum health. My regular adjustments allow my body to function to the best of its ability, getting me through numerous musical theatre performances and many years of exams. I know it will help me live a long, happy and healthy life.

Looking forward to helping you realise your human potential.

Jaya

Dr. Nizar Asks some important questions of interest to Perth residents - Chiropractor Perth Dr. Nizar Asks...

How long will you need chiropractic care?
You'll need chiropractic care as long as you live in Perth and encounter physical, chemical or emotional stress that you cannot adapt to or accommodate. Ready to get started? Call our office today.
Are aches and pains good or bad?
While aches or pains may be unpleasant, they're merely warning signs. As a Perth chiropractor, I see this all the time. The pain is not the problem! It just means a limitation has been reached and something needs to change. That's when we get to work correcting the underlying cause.
